ISOT conference in Iceland

Aurora over Iceland

On June 22, 2024, just as we are enjoying the very longest days of the year, I’ll be in Iceland participating in the ISOT 2024 conference. The International Symposium on Olfaction and Taste will draw ENTs and olfactory scientists from around the world to discuss all kinds of topics related to this field.

This year, the organisers have granted the patient advocates a slot to address attendees and talk about our goals, our concerns, and how we can be better patient advocates for people like you. It’s a great honour to be a presenter. I’ll be there alongside members of anosmie.org, the French organisation that represents patients to clinicians and researchers.

I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts on what it means to be a patient advocate, and why I think we have missed one obvious thing about smell loss and patient well-being. There will be an update here in July with all the details.

Here’s the preliminary program on smell dysfunction to be held on June 22:

Smell and taste disorders: Taking research and care further with patient organizations

    • Organizer: Jean-Michel Maillard Chabha Djouder (anosmie.org, France)
    • Claire Fanchini (anosmie.org, France)
    • Christine Kelly (AbScent/ckos, London, United Kingdom)
    • Jean-Michel Maillard (anosmie.org, France)
    • Claire Martin (anosmie.org, France)

Other topics that are part of that day’s symposium:

    • Mechanisms driving long-COVID olfactory dysfunction and potential therapeutic strategies
    • Nose to brain – olfactory dysfunction in aging and neurodegeneration
    • Olfaction and other senses – combined disturbances, interaction and implications for evaluation and therapy
